Process industries typically handle organic wastes in any combination of three ways: abatement of VOCs, recycling of useful solvents and disposal of waste solvents. The problem with this approach is that it relies on costly steps which are designed only with the idea of reducing emissions. Even to that end, VOC abatement systems often are only trading VOC emissions for NOx, SOx, CO2, CO, Furans, Dioxins and other forms of pollution. Disposal is an ongoing cost, and it ultimately causes pollution from the end handler. AAI can provide solvent recovery systems on or near your site to handle solvents and VOC streams at no cost or risk. The principle is simple. AAI's proprietary system uses your waste as a fuel to produce purified CO, CO2, H2, Ar, N2 and/or CH4 depending on the desired products or power configuration. These products are either sold by AAI on the open market, returned to the solvent supplier at below-market prices or used to generate on-site power. The system can be fully financed by AAI, or purchased by a client for on-site purified gas and power production. Functionally, the system replaces your VOC abatement and disposal steps. | QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Q: CAN THE SOLVENT FUEL PROCESSOR HANDLE MIXED FEEDSTOCK? A: Yes. It's been run successfully on variable mixtures of alcohols, ketones, aromatics, acetates and many other industrial solvents. There is no need to separate and control feed species into the system. Q: HOW MUCH POWER CAN YOU GENERATE? A: The specific answer depends on the solvent feed. However, in rough numbers, power generation will be around 1.3 kW-hr/lb-solvent. Q: WHAT ABOUT HALOGENATED SOLVENTS? A: Non-halogenated solvents are ultimately what must go into the Solvent Fuel Processing system. However, depending on the concentration and species of halogenated contaminants in the solvent feedstock, it can be removed on the front end before processing. At lower rates, auxiliary natural gas can be used to combine solvent conversion with additional on-site power generation. A2: For gas generation, there is no minimum size. However, economies of scale may make the capital investment/lease costs prohibitive at very small solvent rates.
