Conventional incineration, Thermal Oxidizer (TOX) and Regenerative
Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) units are inefficient at minimizing pollution.  This
occurs for a number of reasons:

  • TOX/RTO's create Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Oxides (SOx)
from the nitrogen dilution and fuel.  Thus, while reducing Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs), they are creating other problems.
  • TOX/RTO units are steady state devices, yet most VOC sources are
from batch systems.  Thus, the TOX/RTO unit has to run with make-
up fuel frequently.  Destruction of VOCs is generally around 90% on
the low end and up to 98% for an RTO.
  • TOX/RTO units must typically be run at <200 ppm feed
concentration in air/N2.  If a waste stream is >200 ppm, dilution air
is added to maintain the dilute concentration.

AAI's VOC condenser operates efficiently using a combination of closed
loop and sacrificial cryogenic working fluids to allow >99.9% equivalent
destruction efficiency of VOCs and uses those VOCs in a variety of ways:

  • Liquefy all VOCs and return them to your process.
  • Liquefy VOCs and send to AAI's Solvent Handling system, which
converts all organics into purified gases or on-site power.
  • Send liquefied VOCs to your existing solvent processing operation.

Any one of these options can improve your existing approach or eliminate
VOCs from new operations.

Is this the right solution for every VOC vapor waste stream?

No.
If you're looking to condense VOCs from a stream instead of treat the
stream in a TOX or RTO, the comparable operating expenses depend
mostly on the stream concentration.  Compared to a conventional TOX, the
AAI system will have superior operating costs if the waste air/N2 stream is
>350 ppm VOCs.  Compared to an RTO, the AAI system is more cost
effective when the waste stream is >1400 ppm VOC.

We're not interested in wasting your money.  In some cases, the VOC
condensing system is not the most cost effective option.  But, in many
industrial processes, it can add significant cost and environmental
savings compared to conventional control technology.
